A preemptive strike is a military action taken by a state to neutralize a perceived imminent threat from an adversary, based on the belief that an attack by the opponent is imminent and unavoidable. The goal is to gain a strategic advantage by striking first, thereby minimizing potential damage. Preemptive strikes differ from preventive wars, as they respond to immediate threats rather than long-term potential dangers.
