A despot is a ruler who has absolute power and uses it in an oppressive or tyrannical manner. The term is often used to describe leaders who rule without regard for democratic principles, individual rights, or the rule of law. Despots exercise authoritarian control over all aspects of government, including the military, judiciary, and legislature.
