Neo-colonialism refers to the process of establishing sovereignty by indirect and economic means towards former colonies that have gained their independence. Instead of providing direct political or military control, it is provided through cultural influences, financial instruments and economic pressure. In short, neo-colonialism summarizes this situation in which former colonies have not fully gained their independence and remain under the influence of external powers.
