Détente is the period in which the tension between the two blocs formed by the USA and the USSR during the Cold War began to normalize through dialogue and direct communication, and thus the tension between the blocs decreased. The period of détente became active when the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 reflected the risk of nuclear war that it created throughout the world. In addition to the Cuban Missile Crisis, the period of détente between the USA and the USSR began with the political developments within the two opposing blocs, the arms race and the Chinese-Soviet tension.
